Liverpool FC confirms immediate departure of head coach Arne Slot
Arne Slot leaves with Premier League title in his first season, but fifth-place finish prompts change in management direction.

Liverpool FC has confirmed that head coach Arne Slot is leaving the club with immediate effect. The decision ends Slot’s tenure after two seasons, during which he secured the Premier League title in 2024-25 but oversaw a fifth-place finish and a trophy-less campaign in his second year.
In a statement released on its website, the club acknowledged the difficulty of the decision while praising Slot’s significant contribution to the organisation. Liverpool highlighted his work ethic, diligence, and expertise, describing him as a leader in his field who embraced responsibility from the moment he agreed to take over the role.
The club specifically commended Slot’s leadership during a period of profound difficulty following the death of player Diogo Jota last summer. Liverpool stated that the compassion and humanity Slot displayed during that time reflected highly on his character, noting that he helped guide the club through one of the most difficult periods imaginable.
Despite the praise for his personal conduct and the success of his inaugural season, the club concluded that the team’s trajectory required a change of direction. Officials emphasised that the departure was not a reflection of Slot’s talents, but rather an indication of the need for a different approach to address the challenges faced in the current season.
Slot’s second season was marked by a failure to defend the league title and a lack of silverware, including damaging defeats to rivals Manchester United. The club expressed gratitude for his achievements, including securing Liverpool’s 20th league title, and wished him well in the next stage of his coaching career.
A process to appoint a successor is now underway. Liverpool stated that Slot and his family will always be welcomed back at Anfield, leaving his legacy intact as the search for a new head coach begins.
