Liverpool FC confirms immediate departure of Arne Slot; Iraola linked as successor
The Dutch manager leaves with the 2024–25 Premier League title but is replaced after a trophy-less second season.

Liverpool Football Club has confirmed the immediate departure of head coach Arne Slot, ending his two-year tenure at Anfield. The announcement was released on Saturday, hours before the kick-off of the UEFA Champions League final between Arsenal and PSG. The club stated that the process to appoint a successor is now under way.
Slot, who succeeded Jurgen Klopp for the 2024–25 season, secured the Premier League title in his inaugural campaign. However, his second season concluded with a fifth-place finish in the Premier League standings and no additional trophies. Despite the drop in league position, the club noted that the result was sufficient to secure a spot in the next edition of the Champions League.
In an official statement, owners Fenway Sports Group (FSG) acknowledged the difficulty of the decision. The statement praised Slot’s "significant, meaningful and successful" contribution, highlighting his work ethic, diligence, and expertise. The owners described him as a leader who embraces responsibility, noting that his appointment was driven by a desire to maintain the club's trajectory.
Despite the praise, FSG concluded that a change was necessary to keep the club moving forward. The owners cited a collective decision to pursue a "more front-foot, aggressive and urgent style of football." This strategic pivot marks a shift from the approach implemented during Slot’s second season, which failed to replicate the immediate success of his first year.
According to transfer market expert Fabrizio Romano, former Bournemouth head coach Andoni Iraola is the leading candidate to replace Slot. While no official appointment has been made, the identification of Iraola suggests a clear direction for the club’s next managerial phase. Slot departs with the club’s deepest gratitude, remembered as the coach who delivered Liverpool’s 20th league title.
