Liverpool dismiss Arne Slot as FSG pivots to aggressive tactical phase
The Dutchman secured the club’s 20th league title in his debut season but oversaw a trophy-less second campaign, prompting an immediate leadership change at Anfield.
Liverpool have confirmed the immediate departure of head coach Arne Slot, ending his two-year tenure at the club. The decision, finalised by Fenway Sports Group (FSG) chief executive Michael Edwards and sporting director Richard Hughes, marks a significant shift in the club’s strategic direction following a fifth-place finish in the Premier League.
Slot, 47, guided Liverpool to their 20th league title in his debut 2024-25 season, replacing Jurgen Klopp who stepped down in 2024 after nine years. However, the club’s second season under his leadership was characterised by a failure to defend the title and a lack of silverware, including notable defeats to rivals such as Manchester United.
In a statement, FSG acknowledged the difficulty of the decision while praising Slot’s "significant, meaningful and... successful" contribution. The owners highlighted his work ethic and expertise, describing him as a leader who embraces responsibility. Nevertheless, the hierarchy concluded that the next phase of the club’s development requires a "more front-foot, aggressive and urgent style of football."
The dismissal comes after an assessment of the situation conducted last weekend, despite previous assurances throughout the season that a change of head coach was not on the agenda. Edwards and Hughes determined that the current tactical approach was insufficient for the club’s ambitions in the upcoming campaign.
A process to appoint a successor is now underway, with Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola identified as the leading contender. It remains unconfirmed whether Iraola has entered formal negotiations or accepted the role, but his status as the primary candidate suggests a clear preference in the recruitment strategy.
