FSG demands tactical shift as club seeks Champions League return

Liverpool Football Club has confirmed the immediate dismissal of head coach Arne Slot, ending his two-year tenure at Anfield. The decision follows a Premier League campaign in which the club finished fifth, missing out on Champions League qualification by 24 points. Despite Slot securing the league title in the 2024-25 season, owners Fenway Sports Group (FSG) determined that the squad required a tactical evolution to maintain competitiveness.

In a statement acknowledging the difficulty of the decision, the club praised Slot’s "significant, meaningful and successful" contribution. FSG highlighted his work ethic and expertise, describing him as a leader who embraces responsibility. However, the hierarchy concluded that the next phase of the club’s development necessitates a "more front-foot, aggressive and urgent style of football," moving away from the approach implemented during his time in charge.

The dismissal comes despite a substantial investment in the squad, with the club spending £450 million on players during the summer transfer window. Liverpool lost 12 games during the season, a statistic that underscores the challenges faced during the title defence. The club’s failure to secure a top-four finish has triggered a search for a successor who can deliver immediate tactical improvement and European qualification.

Andoni Iraola, who led Bournemouth to sixth place and Europa League qualification, is considered the leading candidate for the role. Iraola’s appointment appears increasingly likely, with some betting firms having already stopped taking bets on his succession. His success at Bournemouth, which included an 18-game unbeaten streak to conclude the season, has positioned him as a manager capable of bringing a new tactical look to Anfield.

Other potential targets include Julian Nagelsmann, who guided Stuttgart to fourth place in the Bundesliga, and former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp. Oliver Glasner, available after winning the Conference League with Crystal Palace, and club legend Steven Gerrard are also being considered. The club’s search aims to identify a coach who can implement the aggressive style demanded by the ownership group and restore the team to the upper echelons of English football.
