Liverpool dismiss Arne Slot after Premier League title despite tactical shift demands
Andoni Iraola emerges as leading candidate to replace Slot, who ends two-year tenure marked by fan unrest and injuries

Liverpool FC has confirmed the immediate dismissal of head coach Arne Slot, ending his two-year tenure at Anfield. The decision, made by sporting director Richard Hughes and Fenway Sports Group chief executive Michael Edwards, marks a significant departure from the club’s successful inaugural campaign in the 2024-25 season, during which Slot secured the Premier League title. Slot becomes the first Liverpool manager to be sacked despite winning the league in his first season.
The dismissal follows a second season characterised by a fifth-place finish in the Premier League and 19 losses across all competitions. The campaign began with the tragic passing of Diogo Jota and was marked by significant injuries, culminating in regular boos from supporters at Anfield. FSG issued a statement praising Slot’s work ethic and diligence but indicated that the club must evolve to meet the demands of its next phase.
Key factors cited for the change include a perceived lack of authority compared to predecessor Jurgen Klopp, particularly when the team faced difficulties. There was also a reported breakdown in the relationship between Slot and Mohamed Salah, who indirectly criticised Slot’s style of play via social media earlier this month. Club sources noted that players questioned whether they truly believed in Slot’s methods during the struggles.
The hierarchy believes the next phase demands a front-foot, aggressive and urgent style of football, which they feel Slot cannot provide. This tactical shift is deemed necessary as Liverpool plans major signings, including Jeremy Jacquet in a £60m deal from Rennes, following a record spend of £415m in the previous summer. The club felt that delaying the decision would be unfair to the squad and damaging to preparations for the upcoming season.
Andoni Iraola is identified as the leading candidate to replace Slot, having been appointed by Hughes at Bournemouth. Contact has already been made with the Portuguese manager. Xabi Alonso was considered for the role but had already joined Chelsea on a four-year deal. Slot’s contract was set to expire next summer, and he leaves with no bad blood, though the club views a new manager as essential to manage the ongoing transition.
