Club finishes fifth, 25 points behind champions Arsenal, and initiates talks with Andoni Iraola for new head coach role

Liverpool has dismissed Arne Slot as head coach following a single season in charge, a decision made despite the Dutchman leading the club to their 20th Premier League title. The club finished fifth in the league table this season, trailing champions Arsenal by 25 points, and suffered 20 defeats across all competitions during his tenure.

The hierarchy has moved quickly to identify a successor, with Liverpool set to open formal talks this week with former Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola. Slot, who replaced Jurgen Klopp in 2024, was sacked on Saturday after failing to replicate the immediate success of his debut campaign, where the Reds secured the league title with four games to spare.

In an emotional open letter published in the Liverpool Echo, Slot stated he is leaving the club “exactly where it belongs: among Europe’s elite.” He emphasised that securing Champions League qualification was a critical responsibility that ensures the club can continue competing at the highest level. Slot described his time at the club as a “pleasure” and expressed complete confidence in the foundations built by the players and staff.

Slot paid tribute to the late forward Diogo Jota, who died in a car crash with his brother Andre Silva last summer while players were returning for pre-season training. He described Jota’s passing as “indescribable” but highlighted the extraordinary compassion shown by the Liverpool family. Slot noted that the way the club honoured Jota’s memory would stay with him forever, transcending the sport itself.

Reflecting on the city’s resilience, Slot referenced the May 2025 trophy parade, where Paul Doyle drove through crowds on Water Street. Doyle was subsequently jailed for 21 years and six months for charges including dangerous driving and causing grievous bodily harm. Slot acknowledged the spirit of unity displayed by fans during that period and expressed hope that it would help bring the accountability campaigners have sought for years.

The Dutchman recalled the significance of the 20th league title celebration, noting the large crowds lining the streets outside the stadium. He remarked that having the fans share in the triumph was made more meaningful after the disruptions of 2020. Slot concluded that while change is part of football, the club will always judge itself by its biggest honours and that he never stopped striving for that standard.
