Light Phone unveils $299 ‘Light Flip’ as distraction-free hardware gains traction

Brooklyn-based Light Phone has announced the Light Flip, a minimalist ‘dumb’ flip phone designed to offer a distraction-free alternative to modern smartphones. Priced at US$299, the device targets users seeking simplicity and durability, particularly within the Gen Z demographic who are increasingly pushing back against smartphone saturation and big tech influence.

The Light Flip features a 2.8-inch OLED display, 5G connectivity, USB-C, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and a headphone jack. It lacks a front screen, relying instead on a notification LED for alerts, and does not have near-field communication (NFC) capabilities. The device runs on LightOS, offering basic tools such as a phone, alarm, calculator, calendar, and directions, with a software development kit announced in May to enable third-party developers.

Hardware is constructed from plastic, available in six colours including black, navy, red, pink, yellow, and light gray, and is IP54 water- and dust-resistant. It includes a replaceable 1,800-mAh battery and a 12-megapixel camera on the back. The absence of a touchscreen and NFC precludes tap-to-pay functionality, distinguishing it from standard smartphones.

Light Phone is also raising the price of its Light Phone III from US$699 to US$899 due to RAM shortages and tariffs. To address affordability, the company is introducing a 24-month contract option for the Light Flip at US$39 per month, including a service plan powered by AT&T and T-Mobile’s network with 1 GB of data and unlimited calls and texts. A similar subscription plan is available for the Light Phone III at US$59 per month.

The announcement coincides with a broader market trend, including Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy Unpacked event and Commodore’s recent announcement of the Callback 8020 smart flip phone. While Commodore’s device runs an operating system that blocks social media but allows utilitarian apps, Light Phone maintains a stricter minimalist approach. Reservations for the Light Flip are open now, with shipping scheduled for April 2027.
