Light Phone Is Making Its Dumb Phone More Useful With Third-Party ‘Tools’
Brooklyn-based firm opens door to third-party creators to build ad-free tools, positioning its ecosystem against tightening restrictions from major tech giants.

Light Phone has announced a new developer program for LightOS, the operating system powering the Light Phone III. The initiative is set to launch in May and will enable third-party creators to build and distribute "Tools" such as transit apps, ebook readers, and authentication applications for the device. This move aims to address long-standing requests from the user community for specific utilities that the device's bare-bones philosophy previously excluded.

While the official Tool Library is scheduled to launch this fall, it will host vetted, free applications without ads or data selling. Participation for developers in this curated store is optional, though Light retains the right to reject tools that conflict with its minimalism principles or face legal constraints. The company is also building first-party tools to test the kit, including a Signal client for encrypted messaging.

Users can enable a developer mode to side-load unofficial apps, even if they are not included in the official Tool Library. This flexibility stands in contrast to the restrictive app ecosystems of Google and Apple. Google recently announced stricter verification requirements for developers publishing apps outside the Play Store, including real-name verification and fees, effectively tightening Android's side-loading ecosystem.

Light Phone has been producing utility-focused devices since 2014 to help users reduce reliance on technology and mitigate anxiety from the attention economy. The latest iteration, the Light Phone III, features modernised hardware, including a larger screen and improved camera, while maintaining a bare-bones philosophy. Inventory for the device is expected to be available for immediate shipping this summer, following previous delays caused by tariffs.

A Stanford University study published in April indicates that while minimal phones reduce usage, significant improvements in psychological well-being were only observed in highly motivated users. Despite this nuance, Light Phone reports that retention is much higher on the Light Phone III compared to the previous model, citing the improved functionality and features as key drivers.

The program represents a strategic pivot for the Brooklyn company, which has seen new entrants join the minimal phone market in 2025, including the Minimal Phone and the Mudita Kompakt. By offering a platform with no ads or data selling, Light Phone aims to provide a distinct alternative for creators and users alike.
