Leigh and Wakefield face repeat test for Super League semi-final place

Wakefield Trinity and Leigh Leopards will meet in the Super League Eliminators on 18 September, renewing a contest from the final round of the regular season with a place in the semi-finals at stake.

Sky Sports reports that Wakefield finished fourth, the highest position in the club’s history according to the report, after returning to Super League in 2025 and finishing sixth. The club is now pursuing its first appearance in a Super League semi-final.

Leigh returned to the top flight in 2023 and have since won the Challenge Cup. Their stated ambition is to progress through the play-offs towards the Grand Final, scheduled for Old Trafford on 3 October.

Leigh forward Joe Ofahengaue said the team had failed to execute its game plan in the previous meeting but viewed the play-off fixture as a second opportunity. He told Sky Sports that reaching the Grand Final would be significant for a squad facing departures after the season.

Wakefield head coach Daryl Powell said the regular-season result should not determine the rematch. He expects Leigh to increase their intensity and described the fixture as an opportunity for redemption after Wakefield’s 2025 play-off campaign.

The Eliminator is scheduled to begin at 8pm, with the remaining play-off fixtures continuing through the semi-finals on 25 and 26 September before the Grand Final.
