Lego announces 12 Smart Play Pokémon sets
First non-Star Wars application of interactive brick tech targets younger demographic

Lego has announced 12 new Smart Play Pokémon sets, marking the first time the company’s interactive technology is deployed outside of its Star Wars theme. The announcement signals a strategic shift in Lego’s approach to the franchise, moving away from complex, nostalgic builds designed for the 18-plus demographic toward a lineup aimed at younger audiences. This new collection mirrors the appeal of Lego’s modular Mario range, integrating digital connectivity with physical play through Smart Bricks and Smart Tags.

The price points for the new range span from $15 to $120, with the most significant releases being two all-in-one sets. The premium Charizard vs. Jolteon Ultimate Battle set is priced at $120 and includes an 18cm Charizard figure, a 12cm Jolteon, two Smart Bricks, four Smart Tags, and a charger. These components allow for interactive battle sounds and movement reactions, with a Smart Tag-enhanced healing spray designed to restore health during gameplay.

The second major release is the Training House with Pikachu set, retailing at $70. This set features a Pikachu figure, a brick-built tree house, a training target, a Poké Ball, and a miniature buildable sandwich. It is designed to simulate the experience of nurturing and training the character, utilising one Smart Brick and four Smart Tags to unlock specific audio and visual interactions.

The remaining 10 sets in the collection are smaller, focusing on Generation 1 monsters such as Jigglypuff, Bulbasaur, and Bidoof. While these sets are basic in their standalone form, they become interactive when a Smart Brick is inserted. For instance, Jigglypuff can utilise built-in microphones and speakers, while Bulbasaur and Bidoof react to physical movement. Lego is not currently selling the Smart Brick separately, meaning consumers must purchase one of the new sets to access these features.

In conjunction with the product launch, Lego has confirmed that select physical stores will transform into PokéStops and Gyms. Between August and September 2026, these locations will offer exclusive rewards, including Lego Smart Tags, digital backgrounds, stickers, and branded apparel. All 12 sets are available for pre-order immediately and will officially launch on August 1.
