Six head coaching roles remain open across the NBA as franchises navigate roster overhauls and financial constraints

The dismissal of Jason Kidd by the Dallas Mavericks has created the sixth open head coaching position in the NBA for the 2026 season. While the Milwaukee Bucks and New Orleans Pelicans have already appointed Taylor Jenkins and Jamahl Mosley respectively, Yahoo Sports has included these roles in its assessment of the league’s remaining vacancies. The analysis evaluates each position based on roster construction, salary cap constraints, draft assets, and ownership stability.

The Milwaukee Bucks face a complex structural dilemma centred on Giannis Antetokounmpo. Despite retaining one of the league’s premier players, the franchise is reportedly open to trade discussions, with a resolution expected around the June 23-24 draft. The roster is burdened by significant guaranteed contracts for players such as Myles Turner and Damian Lillard, while the team lacks future first-round draft picks until 2031. Jenkins has been hired to navigate this transition, though the path to recovery remains uncertain.

In New Orleans, the Pelicans operate under an ownership structure that limits executive vision. The team retains a two-time All-Star in Zion Williamson, alongside wings Trey Murphy III and Herb Jones, but the financial model of a small-market team constrains long-term planning. New head coach Jamahl Mosley inherits a roster that struggled with offensive consistency, raising questions about his ability to design an effective system given the personnel available.

The Portland Trail Blazers are navigating a period of financial retrenchment under new owner Tom Dundon. Interim head coach Tiago Splitter performed adequately during Chauncey Billups’ absence, but his future is uncertain as the owner implements cost-cutting measures. The franchise holds valuable draft assets and contracts that could facilitate trades, but the willingness to invest in a competitive roster or a high-profile coach remains unclear.

The Chicago Bulls are undertaking a deliberate rebuild under new lead executive Bryson Graham. The team has traded away veteran contributors to accumulate assets, including the No. 4 pick in the upcoming draft, which is projected to land North Carolina big man Caleb Wilson. The coaching challenge involves developing young talent such as Matas Buzelis and Wilson into a winning product, a task complicated by the franchise’s historical inability to sustain success since the Michael Jordan era.

The Orlando Magic present a high-expectation environment with a roster featuring Paolo Banchero and Franz Wagner. The team nearly upset the Detroit Pistons in the previous playoffs, but questions persist regarding Banchero’s efficiency and the team’s overall offensive ceiling. The next coach must manage a payroll that demands immediate competitiveness while addressing structural weaknesses in player development and offensive design.

The Dallas Mavericks’ vacancy is viewed as the most attractive due to the presence of Cooper Flagg, the 2025 No. 1 overall draft pick and 2026 Rookie of the Year. President Masai Ujiri seeks to align with a hand-selected coach to develop Flagg as the franchise centerpiece. However, the organisation’s recent history, including the trade of Luka Dončić and Ujiri’s previous tenure with the Toronto Raptors, suggests significant challenges in building a sustained contender around a young core.
