Leafs secure top NHL draft slot amid debate over McKenna selection
Analysts suggest the club will prioritise best available talent over positional needs, with Gavin McKenna remaining the expected choice despite emerging doubts.

The Toronto Maple Leafs have secured the first overall pick in the upcoming NHL Draft following the results of the lottery. The organisation now faces a pivotal decision regarding which player to select, with significant speculation centreing on Gavin McKenna, a prospect who has been regarded as the top candidate for more than a year.
McKenna, who played for the Medicine Hat Tigers in the Western Hockey League before spending the past season at Penn State in the NCAA, experienced a slow start at the university level but reportedly found an impressive groove later in the campaign. Despite his long-standing status as the presumed number one pick, questions have arisen regarding whether he could fall out of the top spot after holding it so firmly for the past couple of years.
The Athletic’s Scott Wheeler published a new mock draft on Tuesday, still projecting McKenna as the top pick. Wheeler noted that while there is doubt surrounding McKenna and a case exists to address a defensive need, the Leafs are likely to prioritise the best available talent. He cautioned that it is risky to chase a premium position at the expense of premium talent, suggesting the club will land on McKenna in the end.
The Maple Leafs are coming off a difficult season and may undertake significant personnel moves this offseason. Given this context, analysts advise that the team should select the player they believe is the best available rather than addressing specific positional needs. If the Leafs believe McKenna is the top prospect, he remains the logical choice despite the debate.
It remains uncertain whether McKenna will fall from the top spot, and the final decision by the Maple Leafs has not yet been made. The choice will not be fully judged until a decade or so has passed, but for now, the team is leaning in the direction of selecting the highest-rated talent available.
