Sunderland secured a 1-1 draw at Brentford after Enzo Le Fee converted an 82nd-minute penalty, cancelling out Vitaly Janelt’s opener.
Brentford took the lead shortly before the hour when Janelt found the top-left corner with a well-taken effort. The hosts had drawn 1-1 at Leeds United in their previous league match.
Sunderland had threatened earlier, but Dan Ballard’s first-half goal was ruled out for offside. Le Fee also struck the post with a long-range effort as Sunderland operated with a back five.
The equaliser followed a decision by referee Thomas Bramall to award a penalty for a holding offence by Keane Lewis-Potter on Wilson Isidor. VAR confirmed the decision before Le Fee sent his spot-kick into the bottom-right corner.
Brentford remained unbeaten in the Premier League and moved into fifth place, according to the Sky Sports account of the match. The draw was their second consecutive league game in which they surrendered a lead late on.
