The Los Angeles Lakers have agreed to a one-year, $3.3 million contract with veteran forward Matisse Thybulle, a move designed to address perimeter defence needs following the departure of Marcus Smart to the Houston Rockets. According to reporting by ESPN, the signing brings the team’s roster to 16 players, all holding guaranteed contracts. While the offseason maximum allows for 21 players, the NBA mandates a reduction to 15 before the regular season begins, creating an immediate personnel crunch for the organisation.
Thybulle, a two-time All-Defensive selection, is viewed as a low-risk acquisition for a squad that lacked resources for wing defence after the sign-and-trade acquisition of Walker Kessler. However, the addition necessitates a roster trim. With the exception of Thybulle, the prior 15 players all held guaranteed deals, and the team is unlikely to waive a guaranteed salary given the lack of eager trade partners for such contracts. Consequently, a trade is considered the most probable mechanism to reach the 15-player limit.
The Lakers currently hold seven trade-eligible players, though several have significant constraints. Luka Dončić is not expected to be moved to resolve this specific issue. Jarred Vanderbilt possesses a negative contract, meaning any trade would likely require the attachment of draft capital. Jaden Hardy’s salary cannot currently be aggregated in trades, whereas Dalton Knecht and Jake LaRavia can be combined to facilitate larger deals. Adou Thiero, who impressed during Summer League, is viewed as a developmental project the team prefers to retain.
Analysts suggest Bronny James is the most expendable candidate among the eligible group. His father, LeBron James, remains a free agent with at least five teams, including the Cleveland Cavaliers, Miami Heat, and Philadelphia 76ers, reportedly pursuing him. While a father-and-son reunion is not guaranteed, as previously noted by The Athletic, the assumption persists that Bronny may follow his father’s destination. This dynamic complicates the Lakers’ long-term planning, raising questions about whether the younger James is viewed as a genuine prospect or merely a condition of securing the elder James.
The decision will hinge on the Lakers’ assessment of James’s value without his father in the building. Although Bronny James earned rotation minutes during the previous playoffs, those opportunities arose from injury crises rather than consistent offensive production. Other candidates, such as Knecht and LaRavia, have demonstrated more NBA-calibre experience or physical tools.
