Kylie Minogue reveals second cancer diagnosis in new Netflix documentary
In a candid three-part series, Minogue discusses keeping her condition secret during her Grammy-winning resurgence and advocates for routine health checks
Kylie Minogue has disclosed that she was diagnosed with cancer for a second time in early 2021, a revelation detailed in the new three-part Netflix documentary titled Kylie. Directed by Michael Harte, the series became available on the streaming platform on 20 May 2026. The 57-year-old pop icon confirms she is now well following the diagnosis, which occurred after a routine medical appointment, and uses the platform to emphasise the critical importance of early detection and regular check-ups.
Minogue, who successfully treated breast cancer in 2005, explained that she kept her 2021 diagnosis private during a period of significant professional achievement. This included the release of her 2023 Grammy-winning single Padam Padam and the album Tension, which features the song Story. Minogue noted that the track was created to mark that specific period of her life, with lyrics referencing the burden of keeping a secret and the act of taking the stage despite internal struggles.
Describing herself as a "shell of a person" who did not want to leave the house during her recovery, Minogue stated she felt unable to publicly share her condition while she was still healing. She recalled sitting through interviews and considering various opportunities to announce the news, but ultimately chose to keep it to herself. She emphasised that while she felt no obligation to tell the world, sharing the information was her choice to help others and to let go of the experience.
The documentary features interviews with her sister Dannii Minogue, as well as former duet partners Jason Donovan and Nick Cave. It also touches on the intense media scrutiny Minogue faced during her first diagnosis in 2005, which prompted Victorian Premier Steve Bracks to remind journalists of privacy laws regarding medical records. In contrast to that era, Minogue’s recent career has seen her achieve a Christmas No 1 in 2025 with the song Xmas and release the album Kylie Christmas (Fully Wrapped), drawing her level with David Bowie and Eminem in all-time album chart-toppers.
Minogue used promotional materials accompanying the documentary to urge the public to remain mindful of the vital nature of health check-ups. She acknowledged that such visits can be daunting and triggering but stressed that early detection was helpful in her case. "There are so many people for whom cancer is part of their life and, I get it; you just want to move on and put it in the past," she said, adding that she is grateful to be well today and encouraging those in similar situations to reach out for help.
