Kroenke outlines strategic pivot and cultural overhaul behind Arsenal’s Premier League triumph

Arsenal co-chair Josh Kroenke has reflected on the club’s recent Premier League title victory, describing the journey as a complex process of cultural and structural reform. Kroenke credited manager Mikel Arteta and the squad as the primary drivers of success, emphasising that retaining Arteta remains an "utmost priority" with contract discussions expected in the summer. The co-chair acknowledged past strategic errors, particularly the rapid changes implemented after taking full control and the fallout from the European Super League announcement.

The ownership shift followed a period of significant turbulence, including the club’s defeat in the Europa League final, which Kroenke described as a catalyst for reevaluating the club’s direction. He recalled advice from former chairman Sir Chips Keswick to avoid relegation, a sentiment that became foundational to the club’s stability. Kroenke admitted that attempting to overhaul the ownership model and management structure in a short timeframe was "way too much change in way too short of a period of time," prompting a strategic step back to consolidate the club’s position.

Central to the rebuild was a willingness to enforce a new team ethos through significant financial adjustments. Kroenke highlighted the club’s strategy of writing off tens of millions to offload high-earning players such as Mesut Ozil and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who no longer fit the desired culture. This approach allowed Arteta to reshape the squad, with Kroenke noting that sporting director Andrea Berta was presented with championship rings upon arrival to set a clear standard for winning, referencing the success of KSE’s other franchises in the United States.

Defending the club’s financial commitments, Kroenke noted that Arsenal’s net spend is the third-highest since Arteta’s appointment. He argued that this expenditure was necessary to build squad depth and navigate injury crises, rather than simply raising the ceiling. The co-chair pointed to the experience of the Los Angeles Rams and Denver Nuggets, where sustained investment and patience eventually led to championships, as a model for Arsenal’s own long-term ambitions.

Looking ahead, Kroenke outlined plans to strengthen the squad further to compete in the Champions League and remodelling the Emirates Stadium to blend heritage with modern premium experiences. He stressed that winning the title does not change the imperative to continue evolving, noting that competitors will inevitably improve. With contract talks for Arteta approaching, Kroenke reaffirmed the club’s commitment to maintaining the foundations that have now delivered the league title.
