Korean Orbiter Captures First Images of SpaceX Falcon 9 Impact on Lunar Surface
The Korea AeroSpace Administration has shared images from the Danuri orbiter showing the aftermath of a SpaceX Falcon 9 upper stage striking the moon, highlighting the challenges of debris management on high-energy missions.

The Korea AeroSpace Administration (KASA) has released images captured by the Danuri lunar orbiter showing the crater left by a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket that unintentionally crashed into the moon. The impact occurred in the early hours of August 5, with the four-ton upper stage striking the surface at approximately 5,400mph. NASA estimates the resulting crater is around 60 feet wide and 12 feet deep. SpaceX stated that controlled disposal maneuvers were not possible for this high-energy mission to the Blue Ghost lunar landers.
KASA shared what it claims are the first before and after images of the crash site. The second image clearly shows the crater left by the Falcon 9's upper stage. SpaceX clarified that for higher energy missions like those to a lunar transfer orbit, nearly all performance is devoted to placing the payload in orbit, making controlled disposal not always possible.
Astronomer Matt Bothwell of the University of Cambridge warned that space debris could make it difficult to pass Earth's orbit within a few decades. NASA noted that disturbances to the moon from such impacts can provide valuable insight into ejecta plume behaviour and lunar geology.
The Falcon 9 has been in orbit since January 2025 and carried two lunar landers to orbit on the Blue Ghost mission. The reusable booster (first stage) successfully returned to Earth last year, but the rocket remained in space to ensure the landers reached their intended destination. Meteoroids hitting the moon is a daily occurrence, whereas collisions with human-made objects are far more rare.
The impact poses no danger to Earth, but increasing quantities of space debris are a concern to some astronomers.
