CJ Cup Byron Nelson 2026: Why Brooks Koepka should thrive in Texas
Defending champion Scheffler remains favourite as TPC Craig Ranch undergoes $22m renovation

Brooks Koepka has emerged as a significant threat for the 2026 CJ Cup Byron Nelson, driven by what is described as the best approach play in the field this season. The tournament, held at TPC Craig Ranch in McKinney, Texas, features a newly renovated layout following a $22 million upgrade to the greens and bunkers. This substantial investment aims to stiffen the challenge on a course that has been considered the easiest on the PGA Tour for the past four years.

The renovation includes the reintroduction of fairway bunkers around the 300-yard mark, a change designed to disadvantage players who previously carried these hazards with ease. The new greens are expected to be firmer, shifting the balance of the tournament away from the "point and shoot" approach that previously thrived and placing a higher premium on strategy and proper approach play.

Defending champion and World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler returns as the overwhelming favourite. Having "steamrolled" the field last season, Scheffler ranks near the top of nearly every measurable metric, with driving distance being the notable exception. The more stringent test presented by the renovated course is viewed as an opportunity for his skill set to further separate him from the competition.

While Koepka excels from tee to green, his putting has been described as exceptionally poor this season. This has led to speculation that he may revert to the blade putter used during his five major championship wins, rather than the TaylorMade Spider model currently in use. Despite these struggles, he continues to generate low-scoring opportunities and holds a strong historical track record in Texas, with motivation to secure a win to re-enter signature events.

Other notable entrants include Jordan Spieth, Si Woo Kim, and PGA champion Aaron Rai. Spieth has shown improved ball-striking and has won two of his last five PGA Tour titles in Texas. Si Woo Kim is highlighted for his consistency and precision, having recorded eight finishes of T-11 or better in his past 15 starts. The field also features players suited to specific course conditions, such as Michael Brennan for long driving distance and Christiaan Bezuidenhout for putting.
