Knicks storm back against Wembanyama, seize NBA finals opener
Brunson’s 30 points spark comeback against Spurs

The New York Knicks have taken a 1-0 lead in the 2026 NBA Finals after defeating the San Antonio Spurs 105-95 in Game 1 on Wednesday. The victory, secured at the Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, extends New York’s winning streak to 12 consecutive playoff games and provides the team with an early advantage in the best-of-seven series.

Jalen Brunson led the offensive effort for the Knicks, scoring 30 points and overcoming an early injury scare that saw him leave the court in the first quarter with a knee issue. Brunson’s performance was pivotal in the fourth quarter, where he scored 13 points to help erase a 14-point deficit that had developed in the second half. His clutch play in the final period helped silence the home crowd and secure the win.

Brunson credited the team’s resilience to their chemistry and cohesion. Following the match, he stated that while it was not their best night, their togetherness was the decisive factor in climbing out of the deficit. He noted that knowing the team had each other’s back allowed them to chip away at the Spurs’ lead, particularly during a crucial 22-9 run in the third quarter that tied the game at 76 points.

Supporting Brunson, Karl-Anthony Towns contributed 18 points, OG Anunoby added 17, and Landry Shamet scored 13, ensuring four Knicks finished in double figures. The team mounted an 11-0 run to seal the victory, with the decisive moment occurring with 2:16 remaining after free throws by Victor Wembanyama.

For the Spurs, Victor Wembanyama led the scoring with 26 points, 12 rebounds, and three blocks, but struggled with shooting efficiency, making just six of 21 field goals. Stephon Castle added 17 points, while Dylan Harper and Julian Champagnie each contributed 16. The Spurs established an early lead, going up 10 points after the first quarter, but could not maintain their advantage against New York’s second-half surge.

Game 2 of the series is scheduled to take place in San Antonio on Friday.
