New York Knicks’ Karl-Anthony Towns Pays Homage to Late Mother in Game 1 Win Vs. San Antonio Spurs
Karl-Anthony Towns records double-double and honours late mother in New York’s 105-95 win

The New York Knicks have taken an early series lead in the 2026 NBA Finals, defeating the San Antonio Spurs 105-95 in Game 1 on Wednesday night. The victory provides New York with a crucial road win, shifting the momentum of the series in their favour as they look to maintain pressure on the Spurs.

Karl-Anthony Towns, playing in his first career NBA Finals, was instrumental in the outcome, recording 18 points, 12 rebounds, and four assists in 34 minutes of play. Shooting 7-for-15 from the field, the six-time All-Star described a profound personal connection during the match, stating he felt a calming presence from his late mother. Towns told reporters he felt like a child again, sensing her in the stands, which he described as a comforting and loving experience that allowed him to enjoy the moment on the court.

Head coach Mike Brown highlighted Towns’ defensive impact, particularly in containing Spurs centre Victor Wembanyama. Brown noted the tactical difficulty Wembanyama presents, explaining that the Spurs star can offensive rebound against smaller defenders or pick-and-pop against larger ones. Brown credited Towns with being huge for the team in managing these matchups throughout the game.

The Knicks’ victory was bolstered by a statistically rare performance from Josh Hart, who recorded 15 rebounds, six assists, and four steals while scoring three points. This specific combination of stats is historically uncommon; only one player in the past 20 years had achieved a similar profile, a feat Hart himself accomplished in March 2021. Hart’s ability to secure one-third of the team’s total defensive rebounds underscored his value in half-court defence.

Other key contributors included OG Anunoby, who scored 17 points with 12 coming in the fourth quarter, and Landry Shamet, who added 13 points off the bench. Mitchell Robinson also played a role, logging 13 minutes and grabbing six rebounds despite playing with a broken right pinkie. The team’s collective effort secured the win and set the stage for the remainder of the finals series.
