Knicks Prioritise Discipline Amidst MSG Hoopla as NBA Finals Shift to New York
With the series lead at 2-0, New York faces intense scrutiny and high costs as Game 3 approaches, though players insist on maintaining mental focus over external distractions.

The New York Knicks are preparing for Game 3 of the NBA Finals against the San Antonio Spurs at Madison Square Garden on Monday, prioritising mental discipline amidst significant external distractions. The Knicks hold a 2-0 series lead, having won the first two games on the road, a feat achieved by only two other teams in NBA history before they went on to win the championship. Star guard Jalen Brunson and head coach Mike Brown are emphasising focus, noting that a series lead does not guarantee the title.
This marks the first NBA Finals game at Madison Square Garden since June 25, 1999, when the Knicks lost to the same Spurs franchise. The atmosphere is expected to be intense, with forward Josh Hart noting that the cheapest tickets are priced between $7,000 and $8,000, excluding many long-time fans. Brown acknowledged the high-profile attendance, including rappers Jadakiss and Fat Joe, and actor Ben Stiller, who were present at the Knicks’ pre-game news conference on Sunday, but stressed the need to avoid being distracted by the 'hoopla'.
Brunson, who has been under heavy defensive attention, has shot 34 per cent in the first two games, his lowest playoff showing if the trend holds. He attributed his composure to his upbringing and personal philosophy rather than studying Kobe Bryant’s footage, though he acknowledged a philosophical connectivity with Bryant’s approach. Brown, previously an assistant for the Golden State Warriors, revealed that during the 2022 Western Conference Finals, he specifically assigned Draymond Green to guard Brunson due to concerns about his impact.
The Spurs face a significant historical hurdle, having lost six consecutive games at Madison Square Garden, with their last victory there dating back to November 2019. The series has already seen a court-storming incident during Game 1 in San Antonio, where a fan attempted to take a selfie with Victor Wembanyama, resulting in lifetime bans for two individuals. The NYPD has also cancelled a public watch party for Game 3 due to presidential security protocols.
While the Knicks are the third team in NBA history to win the first two Finals games on the road, they are the only one without a recent championship banner, having not won the title since 1973. The team swept the Philadelphia 76ers and Cleveland Cavaliers in the previous playoff rounds. Brunson remains focused on staying present in the moment, trusting his work and maintaining mental readiness as the series shifts to New York.
