Indian captain confronts reporter during captains’ meet

Indian women’s cricket captain Harmanpreet Kaur has directly challenged media speculation regarding her retirement plans during a press conference ahead of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 in England. The confrontation occurred at the captains’ meet, where Kaur, 37, responded to a reporter’s inquiry about whether the tournament would be her final World Cup appearance.

When asked if this was her last World Cup, Kaur countered by asking the journalist, “Do you think I should stop?” She followed this with a direct challenge to the reporter’s intent, asking, “Then why are you asking this question?” The exchange effectively halted the line of questioning, leaving the room silent.

The incident highlights the intense scrutiny facing the Indian squad as they prepare for the expanded 12-team tournament. The Indian team, which recently secured victory in the 50-over World Cup, has landed in England with the objective of winning the T20 title. Kaur, who made her international debut in 2009, leads a side that finished as runners-up in the 2020 edition and reached the semifinals in 2022.

India has been drawn into a competitive Group A, sharing the pool with Australia, South Africa, Bangladesh, the Netherlands, and arch-rivals Pakistan. The team’s campaign begins on June 14 against Pakistan in Birmingham. Subsequent group matches are scheduled against the Netherlands on June 17, South Africa on June 21, Bangladesh on June 25, and Australia at Lord’s on June 29.

All of India’s group stage fixtures are set to commence at 7:00 PM IST. The top two teams from each group will advance to the semifinals, with the tournament concluding with the final at Lord’s on July 5.
