Kansas State has opened the Collin Klein era with a 71–3 victory over Nicholls, giving the new head coach a commanding start on 5 September.
Avery Johnson threw for 199 yards and accounted for four touchdowns before leaving the game after playing just over a half. Rodney Fields Jr. added 101 rushing yards and a touchdown.
Joe Jackson scored once on the ground and once as a receiver, while Jaron Tibbs and Josh Manning also caught touchdown passes for the Wildcats, according to the Yahoo Sports report based on Associated Press coverage.
Klein previously quarterbacked Kansas State in 2012, when he was a Heisman Trophy finalist and helped lead the team to the Big 12 championship. The result has revived comparisons with that period, although the scale of the opening win came against Nicholls, an FCS opponent.
The margin therefore offers a strong early result for Kansas State but limited evidence of how the team will perform against stronger competition.
