Harry Kane refuses to ‘put a limit’ on World Cup career
England captain cites Messi’s longevity as inspiration for future international service

England captain Harry Kane has signalled his intention to continue his international career with the aim of playing in the 2026 World Cup, refusing to place a definitive limit on his time with the national team. The announcement comes in the wake of England’s 2-1 semi-final defeat to Argentina, a match that saw the side concede two late goals to fall short of the final.

Kane, who is 33 years old and plays for Bayern Munich, has now become England’s record World Cup goalscorer with six goals in the tournament. He referenced the continued high-level performance of 39-year-old Lionel Messi, the tournament’s leading scorer with eight goals, as inspiration for his own potential longevity at the elite level.

“It’s too early to talk about that,” Kane said regarding his future. “I mean, as a person, it’s always just about taking it year by year and how I feel. The national team is my pride and joy. It’s what I love to do most, more than anything.”

The striker acknowledged that four years is a significant period, noting he will be 36 by the time the next tournament arrives. However, he emphasised that he does not wish to impose artificial constraints on his career. “Obviously, four years is a long way away. I’m 33 in the summer, but as you saw on the other end with Messi there, he’s still performing at the highest level. So, I never want to put a limit on these things.”

The semi-final, played in Atlanta, ended nil-all at half-time before Argentina secured victory in the closing stages. Kane described the squad as “gutted” and “devastated” after the late collapse. “When you’re so close, when you’re 10-plus minutes away, and it slips out of your hands like that, obviously the lads are devastated,” he said.

England will now conclude their tournament with a third-place play-off against France in Miami on Saturday. Kane admitted the mood within the camp is somber, stating, “There’s not much to say for now. Everyone has to process what’s just happened.”

Looking ahead, the national team will return to action in approximately two and a half months to begin their Nations League campaign against Spain, who reached the World Cup final. Kane insisted the focus must now shift to recovery and improvement. “Now we just have to take it on the chin. There’s nothing we can do. We go away and try to improve.”

The match was also marked by a post-match interaction between Kane’s teammate Jude Bellingham and Argentina captain Lionel Messi. Bellingham, who had been involved in a confrontation following a foul on Elliot Anderson, later described the exchange as merely a “discussion” rather than an altercation, despite expectations that the incident would be amplified by media outlets.
