Juddmonte faces strategic dilemma after Kalpana secures second Group One in 24 hours
Kalpana’s narrow victory in the Yorkshire Oaks forces Juddmonte to determine which of their top horses will target the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe.
Juddmonte’s European racing operation has been presented with a significant strategic decision following Kalpana’s victory in the Legends Global Yorkshire Oaks at York Racecourse. The mare, ridden by Colin Keane, held off a late challenge from Sparan Nua by a short head to secure a second Group One win for trainer Andrew Balding and the stable within 24 hours. This result follows the previous day’s success by Item in the Juddmonte International.
The race at York was characterised by a fast pace, with Aidan O’Brien’s Sugar Island leading the field by a substantial margin. However, as the main contenders began to close the gap, Keane committed Kalpana to the chase from three furlongs out. Despite Sparan Nua making up considerable ground in the final stages, the 10-11 favourite maintained her position to take the line.
Juddmonte’s European racing manager, Barry Mahon, acknowledged the tactical challenges of the race, noting that the pacemaker dropped away earlier than anticipated. Mahon described Kalpana’s performance as resilient, highlighting her versatility across different ground conditions and distances. He noted that the five-year-old mare has fully matured, demonstrating consistent form that has answered previous questions about her capabilities.
The immediate focus now shifts to the allocation of resources for the remainder of the season. Mahon indicated that the team must determine whether Kalpana or Item will be the primary candidate for the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe. He suggested that a decision is expected within the next couple of weeks, following discussions with the owners.
Ground conditions are likely to be a determining factor in this choice. Mahon observed that Item is a horse that prefers top of the ground, having performed well on good to soft conditions the previous day. In contrast, Kalpana has shown a preference for faster ground, a factor that may influence whether she targets the Arc or remains in Britain.
Should Item be selected for the French classic, Kalpana is expected to target the Qipco British Champions Fillies & Mares Stakes at Ascot in October. Mahon also noted the possibility of Kalpana retiring at the end of the year, with the Breeders’ Cup remaining a potential alternative target depending on the final campaign structure.
