Jorge Jesus retains Ronaldo for Portugal’s Nations League opener
New head coach Jorge Jesus has named his first squad, placing the selection of Cristiano Ronaldo squarely on performance metrics rather than historical status.
Jorge Jesus has confirmed the inclusion of Cristiano Ronaldo in Portugal’s squad for the upcoming UEFA Nations League campaign, marking the first selection decision for the new head coach. The appointment follows the dismissal of Roberto Martinez, who was replaced after Portugal’s 1-0 defeat to Spain in the World Cup round of 16.
Jesus, who previously managed Ronaldo at Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia where they secured the league title last season, emphasised a meritocratic approach to squad selection. While acknowledging that the 41-year-old forward holds a unique position due to his five Ballon d’Or awards, Jesus stated that these accolades do not influence his tactical decisions.
“All the called-up players are at my disposal,” Jesus said. “If he performs well, he plays. If he doesn’t perform well, he doesn’t play. That’s how I treat everyone.” The coach further clarified that while Ronaldo’s career is distinct, his status does not guarantee a starting role.
Ronaldo, the leading scorer in men’s international football with 146 goals, is currently 21 goals away from reaching the 1,000 career goal milestone. Jesus expressed doubt that this landmark would be achieved in the national team shirt, suggesting it is more likely to occur during his tenure at Al-Nassr.
The 41-year-old has indicated that the recent World Cup was likely his final major tournament, though he has not confirmed a specific retirement date from international play. He will be 43 by the time of the 2028 European Championship, the next major tournament on the calendar.
Portugal will begin their Nations League fixtures by hosting Wales on 24 September. The squad is scheduled to play away at Norway on 27 September, visit Denmark on 1 October, and host Norway again on 4 October.
