East Grand Forks prospect edges Schaefer by two strokes at Grand Forks Country Club

East Grand Forks golfer Brody Johnson has claimed the Grand Forks All-City Men's Championship, securing a victory that provides immediate momentum as he prepares for his collegiate career. The 18-year-old freshman finished with a two-day total of 137 at the Grand Forks Country Club on Sunday, defeating former Grand Forks Red River and University of North Dakota golfer Nick Schaefer by two strokes.

Johnson’s performance was built on consistency rather than low scoring. He began the tournament tied for third after posting a 69 on Day 1 at King's Walk, sitting two shots behind leader Matt Norby and one behind Schaefer. He followed this with a 68 on Sunday to close out the event. The result marks a significant improvement from last season, where Johnson finished in a tie for fourth in his third appearance at the all-city event.

The victory serves as a critical confidence builder for Johnson, who is set to begin his freshman season at the University of Minnesota-Crookston next week. The Golden Eagles will field a squad of 10 players, with the top six advancing to the first tournament of the season. Johnson indicated that securing a spot in that initial competition is a primary objective, noting that the path to the roster will be competitive.

Johnson’s preparation included advice from his swing coach to maintain scores in the 69 to 70 range to remain in contention. This strategy proved effective, though it required damage control on the No. 17 hole during the final round. After hitting into a hazard, Johnson managed to secure a bogey, avoiding a double bogey that could have jeopardised his lead. He described the hole as a critical moment where he successfully kept the score from deteriorating further.

This championship adds to a successful summer for the young golfer, who also won the Club Championship at Valley Golf Course in East Grand Forks the previous week. Prior to that, Johnson reached the match play semifinals of the Birchmont tournament in Bemidji, defeating opponents including Chad Skarperud and Parker Brock, who spent his freshman season at South Dakota State.
