Philadelphia 76ers star Joel Embiid has issued a direct appeal to supporters not to sell their tickets to New York Knicks fans ahead of the upcoming NBA playoff series. The request comes as the team prepares to host the Knicks at Wells Fargo Center, following a historic comeback from a 3-1 deficit against the Boston Celtics earlier in the postseason.
Embiid, who returned from an appendectomy to lead the 76ers to victory, cited the overwhelming presence of visitors during the rivals' previous 2024 series as the primary motivation for his plea. He described the atmosphere created by New York supporters in Philadelphia at that time as resembling Madison Square Garden East, noting that the team will require a loud home crowd to counter such an environment.
To assist fans who might be tempted to sell their tickets for financial reasons, Embiid has offered direct financial assistance. He stated that he is willing to support those in need, emphasising that the team requires the fans' presence to ensure the home advantage is maintained at Wells Fargo Center.
The 76ers are scheduled to resume the series at home starting with Game 3 on Friday, after the first two contests were played in New York. This marks a significant shift in momentum for the franchise, which had previously suffered a streak of six consecutive playoff series losses to Boston, with the last three occurring during Embiid's tenure.
Embiid's return to the court was instrumental in the team's success against Boston, where he averaged 28.0 points, 9.0 rebounds and 7.0 assists over the final four games. His performance helped snap a league-record streak of 0-18 when trailing 3-1 in a series, a statistical anomaly that Boston had previously exploited with a 32-0 record when holding such a lead.
The 76ers ownership had previously attempted to restrict New York fans from purchasing tickets for Game 6 of the 2024 series, yet the visitors still managed to clinch the series on the road. Embiid has since expressed frustration that the home crowd was not sufficiently vocal to support the team during that campaign, a sentiment he is now addressing directly to the fanbase.
