Jets quarterback Geno Smith delivers perfect preseason drive as Tyreek Hill weighs return
New York Jets quarterback Geno Smith completed a flawless 7-for-7 drive in his preseason debut, while free agent Tyreek Hill’s agent confirms the star wide receiver is not expected to sign a new contract before the regular season begins.

New York Jets quarterback Geno Smith made an immediate impact in his first preseason action of the year, completing a perfect 7-for-7 drive for 65 yards and a touchdown against the Pittsburgh Steelers. The performance, which included a touchdown pass to tight end Jelani Woods, suggests Smith is well-positioned to start in Week 1, although rookie Cade Klubnik is expected to see playing time later in the regular season.
The game also marked a significant moment for the Jets’ defence, which had finished the previous campaign without a single interception. This historic streak, unmatched in NFL history since 1933, was broken during the same preseason contest against the Steelers, ending a remarkable run of defensive consistency.
Elsewhere in the league, the status of free agent wide receiver Tyreek Hill remains a focal point for teams and fans alike. Hill, who was released by the Miami Dolphins in February following a season-ending knee injury sustained in Week 4 of the previous season, is prioritising his physical recovery over a quick return to the field.
Agent Drew Rosenhaus appeared on "The Pat McAfee Show" on Friday to address Hill’s timeline, stating that he does not expect the 32-year-old to sign with a new team before the regular season commences. Rosenhaus noted that Hill has been sharing videos of his rehabilitation, including running hills, and that he "looked great," but emphasised that Hill is taking his time to ensure he returns fully healthy.
Rosenhaus indicated that Hill is calculated in his approach, aiming to pick the right team to help win a Super Bowl. The agent expressed confidence that when Hill does sign, he will be a player capable of impacting the playoff race, though no specific timeline for his return has been confirmed.
In other preseason developments, the Houston Texans moved quickly to address their roster following a season-ending injury to wide receiver Jayden Higgins. The Texans signed two new wide receivers on Friday, although their specific identities were not immediately named in the initial reports.
Additionally, Carolina Panthers running back Jonathan Brooks scored a touchdown in a preseason game, capping a drive orchestrated by quarterback Bryce Young. Young completed five of six passes for 49 yards in his limited action, providing a positive sign for the Panthers’ offensive unit as the regular season approaches.
