The 41-year-old star appeared at the Javits Center in New York for a live taping of The Shop, a barbershop-style talk show that marked the end of an eight-year run with James and co-host Maverick Carter as the primary figures. During the episode, hosting duties were formally handed over to Travis Bennett and Steelo Brim, who will continue the series moving forward.
The decision to withhold his choice drew immediate reactions from the audience of approximately 5,000 people. When pressed by Bennett to share his plans, James responded with a smile that he had no announcement to make just yet. The reluctance to commit sparked boos from the crowd, with Bennett noting that the delay was affecting global anticipation and logistical planning for the upcoming season.
NBA commissioner Adam Silver had previously highlighted the administrative impact of James’s delay. Speaking at a separate event during Fanatics Fest, Silver stated that the league needed James’s decision to finalise the schedule, including opening week and Christmas Day fixtures. Silver noted that teams and networks were seeking certainty to lock in their calendars, emphasising that the commissioner’s office was receiving numerous inquiries regarding the timeline.
Sources indicate that James is close to finalising his choice, with many league and team personnel expecting an announcement next week. However, James used the platform to outline his criteria, stating he wanted to join a franchise that shared his philosophy of competing at a high level and "trusting the process." The reference to this mantra, which became closely associated with the Philadelphia 76ers and Joel Embiid, elicited a mixed reaction of cheers and boos from the audience.
James clarified that he had been using the phrase since being drafted in 2003, predating its adoption by the 76ers.
