James delays NBA free agency decision citing family considerations
LeBron James appeared at Fanatics Fest in New York on 16 July 2026 but declined to announce his next team, stating that a decision would be made soon while prioritising family logistics.

LeBron James did not reveal his next NBA team during an appearance at Fanatics Fest in New York on 16 July 2026, despite widespread speculation that the star would use the event to settle the league’s most prominent free agency question. During a live taping of the "Mind the Game" podcast, guest co-host Tyrese Haliburton asked James if a decision was pending, but James clarified that revealing his destination was not on the agenda.
Speaking later at the Boardroom Game Plan event, also part of the Fanatics Fest programme, James indicated that a decision would be made "sooner rather than later." He emphasised that the delay was driven by complex personal considerations, specifically the logistics involving his children. James noted that his son Bronny is remaining with the Los Angeles Lakers, his son Bryce is in his second year at Arizona, and his daughter Zhuri, aged 11, will stay in Los Angeles with his wife, Savannah, and her mother.
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver, who took the stage at the same event, highlighted the administrative impact of the delay. Silver stated that the league must finalise the regular season schedule, which is heavily influenced by player movements. He noted that James’s decision would directly affect the setup for the opening week and Christmas fixtures, adding pressure for a resolution to proceed with league operations.
While James has not committed to a destination, league sources indicate that a return to the Cleveland Cavaliers is the most likely outcome. Donovan Mitchell made a final pitch for James to return to Cleveland, describing the franchise as "home." However, other reports suggest that the Miami Heat and Philadelphia 76ers remain in contention, with the Golden State Warriors and Minnesota Timberwolves also listed as possibilities.
Pat Riley of the Miami Heat acknowledged the uncertainty, stating that the Heat had held discussions about a potential reunion but were now waiting to see what James decides. Riley noted that the team was transparent about their interest but recognised that the decision ultimately rested with the player. As other teams have largely finalised their rosters, the NBA waits for James to make his move, which is expected to trigger further roster adjustments across the league.
