Jaguars poised to shed $14.5m in cap space with Armstead release
John Shipley of Jaguars On SI flags Arik Armstead as the franchise’s most likely June 1 designation, a move that would yield the highest savings of any potential post-June cut for the club.

The Jacksonville Jaguars are expected to execute a significant roster adjustment ahead of the 2026 season, with defensive tackle Arik Armstead identified as the primary candidate for a post-June 1 release. According to John Shipley of Jaguars On SI, Armstead is the most frequently discussed potential cut for the franchise, a decision driven by the need to manage salary cap liabilities rather than a decline in on-field production.
The strategic release after June 1 allows the team to spread the dead money across two seasons, mitigating the immediate financial impact. This specific move is projected to save the Jaguars approximately $14.49 million, representing the highest potential savings available from any single post-June 1 cut on the current roster.
Despite the financial rationale, Armstead’s performance in the 2025 season was robust. The veteran defensive tackle appeared in 16 games, recording 28 tackles, 5.5 sacks, and seven tackles for loss. His contributions were particularly notable in the first half of the season as an interior pass-rusher, although a hand injury curtailed his availability later in the campaign.
Armstead’s current status reflects a broader shift in the Jaguars’ roster construction following a successful 2025 campaign where they won the AFC South and hosted a home playoff game. General Manager James Gladstone has faced scrutiny for a quiet free agency period and a draft strategy that observers widely criticised for reaching on selections. The team has since addressed the defensive line by trading for Ruke Orhorhoro and selecting rookie Albert Regis in the third round, both of whom are expected to assume roles previously held by Armstead.
The potential departure marks a transition for a player originally selected in the first round of the 2015 NFL Draft. While Armstead’s 2019 season remains his statistical peak with 10 sacks, his 2025 output demonstrated he remains a difference-maker. However, the financial imperatives of the salary cap have placed his future with the club in question as the team looks to reallocate resources.
