The 24-year-old has not played since Sunday due to shoulder soreness and is returning to Sacramento for further examination. While the team has not yet officially confirmed the placement, Wilson is anticipated to join the injured list on Friday.
Manager Mark Kotsay stated that Wilson is currently limited to pinch-running duties, noting that there is no swinging or throwing involved. Kotsay explained that Wilson’s availability off the bench is strictly for late-game pinch-running situations. This limitation reflects the ongoing uncertainty surrounding the severity of the injury and the need for further medical assessment.
Wilson’s struggles this season began in May when he dislocated his left shoulder while diving for a ball, an incident that sidelined him for a month. Upon his return, he faced additional challenges with right thumb inflammation and knee issues, which further interrupted his playing time. Despite these physical setbacks, Wilson recently set a major-league record for the most consecutive games at shortstop without an error.
The injury comes at a difficult time for the Athletics, who are currently last in the American League with a record of 49-78. Wilson’s 2026 season statistics include a .266/.298/.388 slash line with seven home runs and 37 runs batted in. These figures represent a decline from his previous year’s performance, where he posted a .311/.355/.444 slash line with 13 home runs and 63 runs batted in.
The placement on the injured list will add to an already crowded roster of unavailable players. Wilson will join first baseman Nick Kurtz, catcher Shea Langeliers, outfielder Tyler Soderstrom, and designated hitter Brent Rooker, whose seasons have already ended. The status of rookie Joshua Kuroda-Grauer remains undetermined, while outfielder Denzel Clarke has begun a minor-league rehab assignment.
With Wilson out of the lineup, Darell Hernaiz, Alika Williams, and Donovan Walton are expected to see time at shortstop. The outcome of Wilson’s examination in Sacramento will determine whether surgery is necessary, a factor that could influence his recovery timeline for spring training.
