Jackson smashes meeting record to win 200m
Jamaican sprinter and Chinese javelin star set new benchmarks in China

Two-time 200m world champion Shericka Jackson has extended her dominance in the Diamond League series with a commanding victory in Xiamen. The Jamaican sprinter clocked 21.87 seconds to win the 200m final, a performance that smashed the meeting record and placed her just 0.01 seconds outside the world lead for the season.

Jackson, who secured victory at the opening Diamond League meeting in Shanghai/Keqiao last week, led from the start in Xiamen. She demonstrated significant strength on the bend to pull away from the field, finishing well clear of her competitors. Her time of 21.87 seconds stands as the fastest in the event at this stage of the competition.

Shaunae Miller-Uibo and Anavia Battle secured second and third place respectively, both recording season’s bests of 22.04 seconds and 22.29 seconds. Neither athlete appeared capable of challenging Jackson’s pace. The 2023 world 100m champion, Sha’Carri Richardson, finished fourth with a season’s best of 22.38 seconds, while Great Britain’s Amy Hunt, the 200m world silver medallist, placed seventh in the nine-runner field.

In the women’s javelin, 18-year-old Chinese athlete Yan Ziyi delivered a historic performance, throwing the second furthest distance of all time. The throw broke the Diamond League record, the Asian record, and the world under-20 record. Yan had previously set the world junior record in the event at the age of 17, marking a continued ascent for the young Chinese competitor.

The results in Xiamen highlight the high level of competition within the Diamond League circuit. Jackson’s consistent performances across multiple meetings underscore her status as the premier sprinter in the 200m, while Yan Ziyi’s record-breaking throw signals a significant shift in the global landscape of field events.
