Iyer’s century restores Punjab Kings’ playoff hopes
Punjab Kings reclaim fourth spot on the points table after defeating Lucknow Super Giants, but qualification now hinges on Sunday’s fixture between Rajasthan Royals and Mumbai Indians.

Punjab Kings captain Shreyas Iyer scored his maiden Indian Premier League century to guide his side to a seven-wicket victory over Lucknow Super Giants at the Ekana Cricket Stadium on Saturday. The win ended a six-match losing streak for the franchise, moving them to 15 points from 14 matches and reclaiming fourth place on the IPL 2026 points table.
Iyer shared a pivotal 140-run partnership for the third wicket with Prabhsimran Singh, who contributed 69 runs. The pair helped Punjab Kings restrict Lucknow Super Giants to a below-200 total, with the bowling attack playing a decisive role in securing the result. Iyer was named Player of the Match for his innings, which he described as a "surreal feeling" that kept his team’s playoff aspirations alive.
The victory has placed Punjab Kings’ qualification fate in the hands of other results. The team now awaits the outcome of the upcoming league match between Rajasthan Royals and Mumbai Indians at Wankhede Stadium on Sunday. Rajasthan Royals currently sit on 14 points; a victory for them would take their tally to 16, securing the final playoff spot and eliminating Punjab Kings from contention.
Following the match, Iyer addressed the critical fixture directly. "We support MI tomorrow," he said, referring to the Rajasthan Royals versus Mumbai Indians clash. The captain noted that the team adopted a relaxed approach ahead of the high-pressure encounter, deliberately avoiding pre-match meetings to maintain mental clarity. He credited this strategy, along with discussions with coach Ricky Ponting, for preventing the players from overthinking.
Iyer praised Singh’s temperament and the effective communication during their partnership, stating it created crucial momentum for the team. With the league stage concluding, the playoff picture is crystallising, and Punjab Kings must now rely on external results to secure their place in the postseason.
