Iraola’s Liverpool tenure begins with victory but defensive crisis looms
Captain Joe Gomez’s early injury and the reliance on teenage defenders underscore sporting director Richard Hughes’ urgent need for reinforcements as Andoni Iraola starts his rebuild.
Liverpool commenced their pre-season tour of the United States with a 4-2 victory over Sunderland in Nashville, marking the inaugural match of Andoni Iraola’s tenure as head coach. The result secured a positive start for the new management, with goals from Kieran Morrison, Dominik Szoboszlai, Federico Chiesa, and Lewis Koumas. However, the performance was significantly complicated by an early injury to captain Joe Gomez, who was substituted in the eighth minute.
Iraola described the loss of Gomez as the “worst news” of the campaign, noting that the squad had entered training without prior injuries. The absence of the captain necessitated a reshuffle in defence, with teenage defenders Mor Talla N’diaye and Ifeanyi Ndukwe making their debuts. The pair held the line until the 68th minute, performing adequately in a situation that highlighted the club’s defensive vulnerabilities. Sporting director Richard Hughes, who attended the fixture, was likely reminded of the urgent need for experienced centre-backs given the current squad composition.
The defensive frailties were compounded by the absence of new signing Jeremy Jacquet, who was rested to manage his fitness after months without competitive play. Jacquet is expected to feature in the final tour game, while Virgil van Dijk was granted additional time off following the Netherlands’ World Cup campaign. Meanwhile, Giovanni Leoni continues individual rehabilitation following a severe ACL tear, leaving Iraola to manage a squad he previously described as “very thin” in defensive options.
On the pitch, Liverpool demonstrated attacking potential despite defensive lapses. Kieran Morrison opened the scoring with a left-footed finish assisted by Harvey Elliott, who made a strong return to the club after his spell at Aston Villa. Sunderland responded through Enzo le Fee and Timur Tutierov to take a lead, but Dominik Szoboszlai levelled the score at 2-2 with a strike from outside the box. Federico Chiesa restored Liverpool’s advantage with a brilliant finish assisted by Calvin Ramsay, before Lewis Koumas secured the win.
The match also provided opportunities for younger prospects, with Josh Abe making his debut in the second half. Abe, who recently turned 16, played a key role in the build-up to Koumas’s goal, showcasing the potential of the club’s academy output. Iraola emphasised that the result was secondary to the work ethic, urging the squad to continue pushing and improve their comfort levels. The team now heads to Chicago, where new arrivals Florian Wirtz, Alexander Isak, and Ryan Gravenberch will begin training, ahead of the next fixture against Wrexham in New York.
