Ipswich Town centre transforms in club colours ahead of decisive Premier League promotion clash with QPR
With the town sitting second in the Championship table, a victory at Portman Road guarantees automatic promotion, though a defeat leaves the club's fate in the hands of rivals Millwall and Middlesbrough

Ipswich Town supporters have orchestrated a significant transformation of the town centre, decking it out in blue and white ahead of a crucial Championship fixture against Queens Park Rangers. The visual display, featuring posters, balloons, and bunting, follows a coordinated call for support from Ipswich Central, reflecting the high stakes of the upcoming match at Portman Road.
Currently occupying second place in the Championship table, Ipswich Town aims to repeat the feat of securing promotion from their final home game of the previous season. A victory in this Saturday fixture would automatically elevate the club to the Premier League, marking a definitive end to their campaign for top-flight status.
However, the path to promotion is not solely dependent on the result of the Ipswich match. Should the Tractor Boys fail to secure a win against QPR, their promotion hopes would remain mathematically viable only if specific conditions are met elsewhere in the league. In such a scenario, Millwall would need to drop points at home to Oxford United, while Middlesbrough must fail to win at Wrexham.
Mark Ashton, the club's chairman and chief executive, has highlighted the significance of the town's response. He stated that seeing the community adopt the team's colours meant a great deal to the club and players, emphasising that the connection between Ipswich Town and the wider community is incredibly special.
The mobilisation extends beyond the town hall and main streets, with local business owners actively preparing for an anticipated surge in attendance. James Cole, who operates a clothes store in the town centre, plans to display team merchandise in his shop window to enhance the community atmosphere, noting that his staff are big fans of the club.
Tina Leamon, owner of a bar and restaurant, revealed that venues have been preparing for three weeks, involving the purchase of extra stock and the hiring of additional staff. She expects approximately 200 people to attend her venue on Saturday, citing increased busyness throughout the season as fans remain loyal to both the football club and local establishments.
Adding to the festive atmosphere, artist Louise Cobbold from Stowmarket has placed player portraits in shop windows and on banners at the Town Hall. These portraits, which have previously appeared on the front of match day programmes, serve as a final tribute to the players before the season climax.
