IPL 2026: Rajasthan Royals poised for final playoff berth as race tightens
Royal Challengers Bengaluru lead the points table, but the battle for the fourth and final playoff position remains complex, with Punjab Kings, Kolkata Knight Riders, and Delhi Capitals still in contention.

The race for the final spot in the IPL 2026 playoffs has narrowed to four teams following Gujarat Titans’ dominant 89-run victory over Chennai Super Kings in Ahmedabad. The win effectively eliminated Chennai from contention and consolidated Gujarat’s position in the top two, leaving Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Sunrisers Hyderabad to contest the other automatic qualification place.
Royal Challengers Bengaluru currently lead the points table with 18 points and a superior net run rate, though they face Sunrisers Hyderabad in their final league match. While a win would secure 20 points and a direct berth in Qualifier 1, Bengaluru only need to avoid a massive defeat to maintain their top spot. Sunrisers Hyderabad, also on 18 points, face a significant net run rate hurdle to leapfrog their rivals, potentially requiring a victory margin of 87 to 89 runs if batting first.
Rajasthan Royals are widely considered favourites to secure the fourth and final playoff berth. Sitting on 14 points, they require a win against Mumbai Indians to reach 16 points, a total that would mathematically guarantee qualification as no other contender can surpass that mark. Their position is further strengthened by the schedule, as they will know the outcome of the Punjab Kings versus Lucknow Super Giants fixture before they take the field.
However, Rajasthan’s path is not without risk. A heavy defeat to Mumbai Indians, combined with wins for Punjab Kings or Kolkata Knight Riders, could leave them stuck on 14 points. In such a scenario, the remaining teams would be tied on points, with net run rate likely determining the final qualifier. A loss for Rajasthan would also benefit Kolkata Knight Riders and Delhi Capitals, clarifying the requirements for the final spot.
Punjab Kings remain in the hunt despite a recent losing streak. A victory over Lucknow Super Giants would take them to 15 points, a scoreline that could still be sufficient for fourth place, particularly given their net run rate advantage over Rajasthan and Kolkata. Their hopes are largely dependent on Mumbai Indians upsetting Rajasthan, as a Rajasthan win would render Punjab’s points total insufficient.
Kolkata Knight Riders face a virtual knockout in their final match against Delhi Capitals. A win takes them to 15 points, but they still require a Rajasthan Royals loss to have a realistic chance of qualification. Their net run rate has recently turned positive, offering a slight edge in tie-breaker scenarios, but they remain reliant on results elsewhere going their way.
Delhi Capitals face the most difficult mathematical challenge. With a net run rate of -0.871, they are the worst among the contenders, making tie-breakers unlikely to assist them. To stay alive, they must beat Kolkata Knight Riders and hope for losses by both Rajasthan Royals and Punjab Kings, while also requiring a significant net run rate swing to overtake their rivals.
