Instagram will let users endlessly swap the audio on old posts
New feature allows unlimited soundtrack swaps on legacy posts, signalling a strategic shift to retain talent against TikTok

Instagram has launched a new feature allowing users to replace the audio track on previously published photos, videos, and carousels without the need to delete and re-upload the content. The update, termed 'Replace Audio', enables creators to swap soundtracks an unlimited number of times while retaining existing engagement metrics, including likes, comments, shares, and reach. The feature is accessible via the post’s edit menu.

Jimmy O’Keefe, head of creator product marketing at Instagram, stated that the tool reflects a broader philosophy that content should be able to "grow and change" with the creator. While the platform confirmed that updating audio will not provide an algorithmic boost, it effectively allows creators to retroactively align old posts with current viral trends. This capability means audiences may encounter videos they previously saw with different soundtracks, transforming static posts into evolving assets.

The move is widely interpreted as a strategic effort to compete with TikTok by offering incentives to content creators, who are crucial for keeping users engaged on the platform. This development follows recent interface changes, such as the ability to reorder profile grid posts and add individual captions to photo carousel slides. These updates reflect Instagram’s ongoing pivot towards a creator-centric model, mirroring TikTok’s short-form video and recommended content features.

Concurrently, Instagram is promoting a new $3.99-per-month premium tier for casual users. This subscription includes features such as 'Story Spotlight' for priority visibility among friends, flashier heart emojis, and 48-hour story expiration. The dual approach highlights the platform’s tension between serving creators seeking monetisation and reach, and average users seeking personal connection with friends and family.

The introduction of these tools raises questions about the long-term nature of social media content. By allowing one piece of content to be infinitely recycled with new audio, Instagram opens up possibilities for brands and creators to reheat viral posts annually without reshooting. However, the shift continues to alienate some average users, who have complained about reduced visibility of content from friends as the platform increasingly resembles a recommendation engine driven by creator activity.
