Indie gaming landscape sees strong sales for Far Far West and confirmed Steam port for Dig! Dig! Dino!
From chess-based roguelites to creature collectors, the latest independent titles are attracting significant attention, with developers confirming expansions and porting plans for existing hits.
Engadget has released a comprehensive weekly roundup of the independent gaming sector, spotlighting a diverse array of new releases and significant updates. The coverage ranges from co-op shooters and hack-and-slash adventures to chess-based roguelites and creature-collecting games, providing investors and enthusiasts with a clear view of market momentum.
Among the standout titles is Far Far West, a co-op shooter developed by Evil Raptor and published by Fireshine Games. The game has demonstrated immediate commercial viability, selling more than 250,000 copies within its first 48 hours on Steam Early Access. Set in a pixel-art universe where players act as robot cowboys hunting undead enemies, the title allows for solo play or squads of up to three friends. It is currently available on Steam, PS5, and Nintendo Switch.
The roundup also examines SoulQuest, a 2D hack-and-slash adventure from SoulBlade Studio. The developer notes that the game features frame-perfect animations resulting from a seven-year development cycle. Players assume the role of Alys, a warrior seeking to reclaim her late husband's soul through a combat system built around light and heavy attack combos. The title is available on Steam and includes a demo for prospective players.
Gambonanza, a chess-based roguelite by Blukulélé, has gained significant traction following a recent Steam Next Fest event, which saw more than 170,000 downloads. The game challenges traditional chess rules through more than 150 powerful "gambits" that modify runs and board tiles. It is now available on PC, macOS, Linux, iOS, and Android, with publishers Sidekick Publishing and Stray Fawn Studio involved in its release.
Updates to existing titles were also a focus of the report, specifically Ball x Pit. The game received a free update introducing two new characters, 11 additional superpowered balls, and new passive abilities. This expansion allows players to re-roll character upgrades, adding depth to the established gameplay loop of collecting and customising balls.
Looking toward platform expansion, developer Antonio "Fáyer" Uribe confirmed that the Playdate-exclusive title Dig! Dig! Dino! is set to receive a Steam port. The port is expected to retain the original game's distinctive one-bit art style, broadening its audience beyond the handheld console. The game, created by the team at Strange Scaffold, focuses on digging for dinosaur bones in a relaxing, delightful experience.
Further announcements include Truck-kun is Supporting Me from Another World?!, an anime-inspired hybrid of visual novel and driving action from Strange Scaffold, scheduled for release later this year. Additionally, Feather's Edge, a tactical Metroidvania from Clockwork Acorn and co-publisher Outersloth, made its public debut at the Indie Live Expo, while Game Quest: The Backlog Battler offers a unique concept where underplayed Steam games act as enemies in a combat simulation.
