Fever Could Be in Trouble for Scratching Caitlin Clark Minutes Before Their Game
League rules require player availability updates by 5pm the day before a game, a deadline the team missed for their star guard.

The Indiana Fever are facing potential league sanctions after failing to list star guard Caitlin Clark on the initial injury report for their Wednesday night match against the Portland Fire. The WNBA mandates that player availability must be confirmed by 5pm the day before a game, unless the team is playing a back-to-back fixture. Clark, who missed practice on Tuesday, May 19, was not reported absent until minutes before tip-off on May 20.

Head coach Stephanie White defended the timing of the announcement, describing the decision to bench Clark as precautionary. White stated that the team was being cautious regarding Clark’s health, particularly following an injury-plagued previous season in which she appeared in only 13 games. “It’s not the time to take a chance,” White told reporters after the Fever’s 90-73 victory. “We just really want to be cautious.”

White further explained that the absence was not listed earlier because the coaching staff expected Clark to play. She noted that it is common for players who miss practice or receive a professional day to not immediately appear on the injury report. “Not everybody that doesn’t practice or gets a pro day is on the injury report; that happens all the time,” White said.

The late announcement left fans at Gainbridge Fieldhouse unaware of Clark’s status until the final moments before the game, resulting in a noticeably emptier arena than usual. The sudden change sparked widespread discussion on social media, with speculation ranging from load management to potential suspension, following viral footage of Clark arguing with an assistant coach during a previous win against the Seattle Storm.

Despite the off-court noise and the administrative controversy, Clark appeared unbothered prior to the game. Video footage showed the 24-year-old sitting on the bench, eating an Uncrustable and waving to teammates. Her health remains a central focus for the franchise, coming off a sophomore campaign where a groin injury limited her playing time, and a preseason scare against the Dallas Wings where she suffered a hard knee impact.
