Indiana begins title defence with emphatic win over North Texas
Josh Hoover threw four touchdown passes in his Indiana debut as the reported national champions opened their season with a 52–16 victory.
Indiana opened its defence of the reported national championship with a 52–16 win over North Texas in Bloomington, extending the momentum of a 16–0 season that delivered the programme its first title.
Quarterback Josh Hoover made an efficient debut after transferring from TCU and succeeding Heisman Trophy winner Fernando Mendoza, who became the No. 1 pick in the NFL Draft. Hoover completed 13 of 16 passes for 231 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions.
Charlie Becker was Hoover’s leading target, catching four passes for 64 yards and two touchdowns. Michigan State transfer Nick Marsh also scored in his first game for Indiana.
The Hoosiers’ running game contributed through Boston College transfer Turbo Richard, who rushed for 58 yards and two touchdowns. The passing attack nevertheless provided the clearest statement in the opening-round performance.
The result came in hot conditions, with temperatures reaching about 90 degrees. Fox Sports reported that Indiana’s defence also showed weaknesses, leaving areas for coach Curt Cignetti’s team to address despite the comfortable margin.
