India deploys AI warning systems to curb lethal human-elephant clashes

State forest departments, non-governmental organisations, and local communities in India are deploying artificial intelligence-based early-detection systems to mitigate frequent and often lethal clashes between humans and elephants. The initiative utilises technologies such as infrared sensors and drones to provide rapid alerts, addressing a critical gap in wildlife management where traditional ground-based patrols have proven insufficient.
India is home to approximately 60 per cent of the world’s wild Asian elephant population. According to the Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change, around 80 per cent of their habitat lies outside protected zones. This proximity brings people and wildlife into close contact, creating conditions where conflicts can turn deadly.
The scale of the issue is significant. In the last five years, there have been approximately 3,000 human casualties due to these encounters. Since 2014, more than 1,000 elephants have also died as a result of clashes. The high volume of casualties underscores the urgency of finding effective mitigation strategies in these shared landscapes.
Previous reliance on ground-based patrols has struggled to keep pace with the speed of elephant movements. In areas where elephants tend to wander, warnings from patrols can sometimes take hours to reach populated areas such as villages and farms. This delay has often meant that communities and farms were unable to take timely action to prevent damage or injury.
To address this inefficiency, stakeholders are designing, testing, and rolling out a range of artificially intelligent systems. These technologies are intended to cut response and warning times down to minutes, or even seconds, allowing for immediate intervention. The collaborative effort involves state agencies working alongside NGOs and local residents to implement these tools across high-risk regions.
While the deployment marks a significant shift in conservation technology, specific efficacy rates or success metrics for the newly installed systems are not yet detailed in available reports. The focus remains on the potential of these tools to drastically improve reaction times compared to the previous hours-long delays experienced with manual patrols.
The rollout represents a targeted response to the unique challenges posed by India’s elephant population distribution. By leveraging artificial intelligence to bridge the communication gap between wildlife movements and human settlements, authorities hope to reduce the number of fatalities on both sides of the conflict.
