HyperX unveils Clutch Talon controller with Hall effect joysticks and open-source customisation

HyperX has officially released the Clutch Talon, a multi-platform gaming controller designed to compete with established market leaders such as Microsoft's Xbox Elite Controller and Valve's Steam Controller. The device distinguishes itself through a suite of innovations, including Hall effect joysticks which mark the first time the company has incorporated this technology into a gamepad. This upgrade aims to provide enhanced precision and longevity compared to traditional potentiometer sticks.

The controller supports dual-mode wireless connectivity via a 2.4GHz dongle and Bluetooth, ensuring compatibility with PCs, Android devices, and officially certified Xbox Series X and Series S consoles. For users who prefer a wired connection, the unit includes a built-in 3.5mm jack for headphones. HyperX has also included a mobile phone adapter that screws into the back of the controller, allowing small Android devices to be transformed into portable gaming handhelds.

Customisation is a central feature of the Clutch Talon, facilitated by tool-free hot-swappable components. Users can swap out alternate triggers, a circular D-pad, rear paddles, and longer analog sticks using built-in magnets without the need for screwdrivers or Allen wrenches. All buttons can be remapped or reprogrammed through the Ngenuity app, which is transitioning from beta to a full 1.0 release to support these configurations.

To further encourage user modification, HyperX has announced plans to release official open-source 3D printing files for the controller. This initiative will allow owners to create their own custom faceplates, adding another layer of personalisation to the hardware. The device comes bundled with a carrying case designed to keep the various interchangeable parts and the mobile adapter organised, particularly for travel.

Simultaneously with the controller launch, HyperX has announced the Cloud Stinger 3 headset as a secondary spring release. Positioned as a more affordable alternative to the flagship Cloud Alpha II, the headset is priced at $50 for the wired version and $100 for the wireless model. It features 50mm drivers and an 80-hour battery life for the wireless variant, though it is noted to have a looser fit than previous models in the range.

While the Clutch Talon represents a significant step forward in configurability, an official release date and final pricing for the controller have not yet been determined. The headset, however, is available for purchase direct from HyperX today. As hardware prices continue to rise across the gaming sector, the combination of the Clutch Talon's advanced features and the Cloud Stinger 3's accessible pricing points offers a notable option for consumers.
