The Carolina Hurricanes defeated the Vegas Golden Knights 4-2 in Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Final, securing a 3-2 series lead and placing them one victory away from the championship. Andrei Svechnikov scored twice, including a short-handed-style power-play goal at the post that extended the lead to 4-1 midway through the third period. Sebastian Aho added a second-period goal in what was described as a breakout performance for the top-line performers, while captain Jordan Staal netted his fifth goal of the series.

The victory marks a significant milestone for the Hurricanes, who have not suffered consecutive losses since mid-January. It is the first time the team has been within one win of the Stanley Cup since coach Rod Brind'Amour captained the franchise to the title in 2006. Goaltender Brandon Bussi secured the win with 22 saves in his second career postseason start, stabilising a team that had previously struggled with a shaky power play and periods where they were outplayed by Vegas.

For the Golden Knights, the loss presents a challenging path forward. Vegas centre William Karlsson left the game midway through the second period with an apparent upper-body injury and was checked out on the bench, not returning for the remainder of the match. Pavel Dorofeyev scored twice for Vegas, marking his first goals since Game 1 of the Western Conference Final, but goaltender Carter Hart conceded at least four goals for the fifth consecutive game, a historical first for a Stanley Cup Final goaltender.

The Golden Knights have previously demonstrated resilience in these playoffs, having overcome a 2-2 series deficit against Utah in the first round and Anaheim in the second round by winning Game 5 and closing out the series in Game 6. They also swept the Presidents' Trophy winner Colorado in the Western Conference Final. However, they now face a Hurricanes team that has not lost back-to-back games since mid-January.

Game 6 is scheduled for Sunday night in Las Vegas. The Golden Knights must win on home ice to force the series back to Carolina for a potential Game 7 on Wednesday night. The outcome of the series remains undetermined, with the severity of Karlsson’s injury currently unknown.
