Hurricanes poised to dethrone Golden Knights in 2026 Stanley Cup Final
With a 12-1 playoff record and elite defensive metrics, Carolina enters the final as favourites against a Vegas side bolstered by championship experience.

The Carolina Hurricanes are positioned as the primary contenders for the 2026 Stanley Cup, with an ESPN analysis predicting their victory over the Vegas Golden Knights. The assessment highlights five critical pillars supporting Carolina’s campaign: offensive depth acquired through strategic trades, a dominant checking line, improved regular-season offensive metrics, elite defensive structure, and reliable goaltending from Frederik Andersen. The Hurricanes enter the series rested and peaking, having swept their opening playoff rounds before defeating the Montreal Canadiens in five games.
Carolina’s path to the final has been defined by efficiency, holding a 12-1 playoff record, the fewest losses by any team since the introduction of best-of-seven series in 1987. They swept the Ottawa Senators and Philadelphia Flyers in the early rounds, followed by a five-game victory over Montreal in the Eastern Conference Final. This trajectory contrasts with the Golden Knights’ journey, which analysts note was facilitated by significant injuries to Colorado Avalanche stars, including Cale Makar and Nathan MacKinnon, during their sweep of the top-seeded Avalanche.
The Hurricanes’ offensive transformation is central to their success. General manager Eric Tulsky’s acquisitions over the past two seasons have reshaped the roster, with four of the team’s top six playoff scorers arriving via trade. This includes leading scorer Taylor Hall and top goal-scorer Logan Stankoven, both linked to the initial acquisition of Mikko Rantanen. The line of Hall, Stankoven, and Jackson Blake has emerged as the playoffs’ top offensive unit, averaging 4.87 goals per 60 minutes at five-on-five, while the checking line of Jordan Staal and Jordan Martinook maintains an expected goals percentage of 70.3 per cent.
Defensively, the Hurricanes have established themselves as the most formidable unit in the postseason. They lead the playoffs in expected goals percentage at 60.7 per cent and share of shot attempts at 59.4 per cent at five-on-five. Their man-to-man system, overseen by head coach Rod Brind’Amour, has limited opponents’ scoring opportunities, with Andersen playing a crucial role on the penalty kill, which operates at a 92.5 per cent success rate. The team’s ability to dominate offensive zone time and smother opponents has been a consistent theme throughout their playoff run.
Betting markets currently favour Carolina with odds in the -150 to -155 range, reflecting their status as the most impressive team in the playoffs. However, the Golden Knights retain a significant advantage in experience, with 11 current players having won a championship with Vegas in 2023, compared to just three for Carolina. Despite this disparity, the Hurricanes’ depth, rest, and structural integrity suggest they are equipped to overcome the Knights’ veteran presence and secure the franchise’s second Stanley Cup.
