Hull City’s Premier League return begins with high-stakes clash against Manchester United

Hull City is set to make its return to the Premier League on Saturday, facing Manchester United in the season’s opening match. The Tigers’ promotion marks the end of a nine-year absence from the top flight, a journey that began with a late-season qualification for the Championship play-offs. Their path to the final was secured by victories over Millwall and Middlesbrough, a run that defied expectations for a club that had started the previous campaign as relegation favourites.
The Tigers’ ascent was characterised by defensive vulnerability, having conceded 66 league goals last season, the fourth-highest total in the division. To address the rigours of elite football, Hull has signed 14 new players during the summer. Much of the team’s attacking hope will rest on Oli McBurnie, the hero of the play-off final who scored 19 goals in the previous campaign.
Manchester United enters the season with a transformed managerial and squad structure. Michael Carrick has been appointed as permanent manager, earning a two-year deal after leading the team to 12 wins, three draws, and two defeats in 17 Premier League matches during the second half of the 2025-26 season. Carrick took over from Ruben Amorim, whose tenure saw the club sit 10th in the table before a dramatic turnaround that included victories over Arsenal, Liverpool, and Manchester City.
The Red Devils have invested heavily in the summer transfer window, recording a net spend of £55m. Midfielders Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans have joined from Chelsea and Aston Villa, respectively, while 18-year-old winger Tynan Thompson arrived from Tottenham Hotspur for £8m. Departures included Rasmus Hojlund, who moved to Napoli for £38m, and Casemiro, Jadon Sancho, and Tyrell Malacia, who all left on free transfers.
The squad faces additional pressure as United prepares to compete in the Champions League for the first time in three years. While Bruno Fernandes remains the club’s talisman, having broken the single-season Premier League assists record with 21 goals last term, uncertainty surrounds the future of Marcus Rashford, who returned from a loan spell at Barcelona. Injuries to defenders Matthijs de Ligt and Lenny Yoro also pose concerns for the backline ahead of the season.
