Hull City owner vows legal action over Middlesbrough play-off reinstatement
Owner states legal team has advised action to seek justice following Southampton’s expulsion and Middlesbrough’s reinstatement in the Championship play-off final.

Hull City owner Acun Ilicali has vowed to pursue legal action if his club loses the Championship play-off final against Middlesbrough at Wembley Stadium. The decision follows the reinstatement of Middlesbrough in the competition after Southampton were expelled for spying on their training session. Ilicali stated that his legal team advised action to seek justice.
Ilicali confirmed that his legal team advised him to pursue action, stating, "Our legal team says that we have to go for action, that's for sure." He told BBC Radio Humberside that the club’s primary motivation is to seek "justice," warning that if justice is broken, "nobody will enjoy football."
The statement was made by Ilicali outside Wembley Stadium prior to the kick-off. The legal threat is a direct response to the reinstatement of Middlesbrough in the final after Southampton were expelled from the competition. Southampton were expelled following an independent disciplinary hearing that found a staff member had spied on Middlesbrough’s training session.
Hull City manager Sergej Jakirovic described his side as "collateral damage," citing the unfairness of the uncertainty and the delay in confirming their opponent. The Championship play-off final is a unique fixture in its 40-year history, as one of the original semi-finalists (Southampton) has been removed from the competition entirely.
Southampton originally defeated Middlesbrough in the semi-finals but were expelled after admitting to spying on the Teessiders' training session at Rockliffe Park. Middlesbrough have never won a match at Wembley, while Hull City is seeking a third promotion to the Premier League and Middlesbrough aims to end a nine-year absence from the top flight.
It is unclear whether legal action will be pursued if Hull City wins the final, as Ilicali’s vow is conditional on a loss. The specific nature and target of the legal action have not been detailed, only that it is advised by legal counsel. The potential impact of the institutional ruling on Southampton’s conduct on the final outcome or subsequent appeals remains uncertain.
The spying incident involved Southampton analyst intern William Salt and occurred prior to the semi-final first leg. An independent EFL disciplinary hearing took place on 19 May regarding the allegations. The final is scheduled for Saturday evening at Wembley, with the institutional ruling on Southampton’s conduct likely to have further fallout.
