Huddersfield Giants to relocate to Dewsbury amid stadium strategy shift

The Huddersfield Giants announced on Friday that they will relocate their home fixtures to Dewsbury Rams’ Flair Stadium starting next season. The decision was revealed at half-time during the club’s Super League match against Catalans Dragons at the Accu Stadium, where supporters were admitted free of charge to mark the occasion. The move represents a strategic pivot for the club, which has shared the 24,500-capacity Accu Stadium with Huddersfield Town since 1994 but now considers the venue too large for its current attendance levels.

Director Rebecca Jackson, the granddaughter of owner Ken Davy, described the relocation as a medium-term solution while the club pursues the construction of a new stadium in Huddersfield. Jackson told Sky Sports that the Flair Stadium, which has a capacity of 5,100 and opened in 1994, is not currently ready for Super League standards. To rectify this, the club plans to invest over £10 million in upgrades to ensure the facility meets the necessary requirements for top-tier rugby league.

Jackson emphasised that the club’s identity remains rooted in Huddersfield, stating that the move is intended as a stopgap to maintain the club’s presence in the region while long-term plans are finalised. "We're still the Huddersfield Giants, we're still based in Huddersfield and Huddersfield is still the home of the Huddersfield Giants," Jackson said. She noted that discussions are ongoing regarding the construction of a new home, with the Dewsbury arrangement serving as a bridge to that future goal.

The announcement has elicited a mixed reaction from fans, with the club hoping to encourage support for the 10-mile move to Dewsbury. The relocation comes against a backdrop of recent governance changes within the club, including Davy’s withdrawal from a bid to purchase The Shay stadium in Halifax in June and his subsequent resignation as chairman last month. The Giants have been seeking a new home for some time, citing the mismatch between their current fan base size and the scale of their long-term venue.

While the immediate focus is on the infrastructure upgrades at Flair Stadium, the timeline for the eventual construction of a new Huddersfield stadium remains undefined. The club has characterised the Dewsbury period as a medium-term arrangement, leaving the duration of the stay and the specifics of the long-term housing strategy open for future development. The move will see the Giants play their home games at the Dewsbury venue from the start of the next season.
