Hisense Unveils RGBX Display Tech at Shanghai Conference as Industry Pivots to Colour Fidelity
The 2026 Multi Primary Color Display Ecosystem Conference in Shanghai highlighted a strategic shift toward human-centric visual performance, with Hisense, BOE, and TCL CSOT presenting new architectures to expand colour gamuts beyond BT.2020.
The display industry is undergoing a fundamental shift in its competitive axis, moving away from a singular focus on resolution and brightness towards colour reproduction and human-centric visual performance. This pivot was the central theme of the 2026 Multi Primary Color Display Ecosystem Conference, held in Shanghai on June 27 and hosted by the SID Beijing Chapter. Industry leaders and academic institutions gathered to present multi-primary colour technologies as the next-generation alternative to conventional RGB systems, which face inherent limitations in expanding colour gamut.
Hisense took a prominent role at the event by unveiling its RGBX technology, described as the world’s first of its kind following its previous RGB-Mini LED developments. The company presented RGBX as an end-to-end architecture that combines an RGBC four-primary-colour panel with a matching RGBC four-primary-colour backlight. Hisense claims this configuration aims to improve colour crosstalk and purity while expanding the colour gamut to more than 130% of BT.2020. The technology was positioned as a high-value direction that could allow Mini LED LCD displays to differentiate themselves from OLED competitors.
Other major players also used the platform to showcase their progress in the sector. BOE presented the industrialisation direction of multi-primary colour technology, outlining pathways for broader adoption, while TCL CSOT introduced LCD panel technology based on multi-primary colours. The conference also featured contributions from academic and standardisation bodies, including Zhejiang University, Hong Kong Polytechnic University, TÜV Rheinland, and the China Electronics Standardization Institute, underscoring the collaborative nature of the emerging ecosystem.
Beyond raw gamut expansion, the presentations emphasised the potential of multi-primary colour displays to address human visual comfort. The technology aims to reduce metamerism, improve colour accuracy, and support circadian rhythm control by reducing harmful blue light. This focus on human-centric performance marks a departure from traditional specifications, suggesting that future market differentiation will rely heavily on visual quality and perceptual accuracy rather than just technical metrics.
However, the commercialisation of these systems requires significant development across the entire value chain. Participants noted that moving beyond RGB necessitates advancements in colour conversion algorithms, content production, encoding, transmission, and certification systems. Standardisation and optical measurement protocols remain critical hurdles that must be addressed to ensure consistent colour quality and interoperability across devices and content providers.
UBI Research analysis suggests that this conference reflects a broader strategic trend within China’s display industry. By combining Mini LED, Micro LED, laser display, and multi-primary colour technologies, manufacturers are seeking to strengthen their premium image-quality competitiveness in a direction distinct from OLED. LCD-based Mini LED retains strengths in brightness, large-area scalability, and price competitiveness, while multi-primary colour technologies are expected to maximise colour gamut and expression to capture high-end market share.
The event concluded with a clear message: the next era of display competition will be defined by how well technology can replicate and enhance human visual perception. As manufacturers race to overcome the limitations of three-primary-colour systems, the integration of four or more primary colours appears to be the key to unlocking wider gamuts and higher fidelity in consumer electronics.
